Hello Kitty House: Dream Vacation for Happy Kids and Sad Adults
I won’t ask why someone designed and built a Hello Kitty house. After all, dedicated fans will do anything to show affection for their favorite characters. I will, however, ask if this is the result of a 5-year-old girl winning the lottery, divorcing her parents, and hiring an architect, because I don’t know who else would want to live surrounded by this many pink bows.
Actually, nobody had to live in the Hello Kitty house permanently. It was designed as a vacation rental. Probably because even die-hard Sanrio fans can’t handle that much pink for more than a week. So if you’ve ever dreamed of taking a trip to Taiwan and surrounding yourself with Hello Kitty EVERYTHING, congratulations. We found your dream vacation. Or your worst nightmare. Depends on your tolerance for adorable cartoon cats.
Inside Taiwan’s Hello Kitty Vacation House
The Hello Kitty vacation villas were part of Uni-Resort Mawudu in Taiwan’s Hsinchu County, where guests could once rent an entire house dedicated to Sanrio’s famous feline. And when I say dedicated, I mean DEDICATED. These weren’t ordinary vacation homes with a couple of Hello Kitty pillows thrown on the couch. The entire houses were designed around the character.
The pink villa looked like a storybook dream house, complete with a pink exterior, white trim, Hello Kitty decorations, and oversized bows. Inside, the theme continued with pink furniture, character-themed decorations, and enough cute little details to make a normal interior decorator faint.
Even the bedrooms were decked out in Hello Kitty style. Imagine waking up surrounded by pink walls, themed bedding, and furniture covered in bows. It’s like sleeping inside a little girl’s birthday cake. A very expensive birthday cake that you can’t eat. Which is honestly my biggest problem with the whole situation.
Not One, but TWO Hello Kitty Houses
Because apparently one giant Hello Kitty house wasn’t enough, the resort actually had two different themed villas. There was the pink English-inspired house for people who wanted maximum pinkness, plus a pastel-green French-country-style version for anyone who preferred their cartoon-cat obsession with slightly less pink.
Both villas featured three bedrooms and two living areas, making them suitable for families or groups of friends. That’s right, you could bring an entire group of people along to experience the Hello Kitty madness. I recommend inviting somebody who hates pink. You know, for entertainment purposes.
Historical reports from 2009 listed the pink villa at around NT$19,900 per night, with the green version costing approximately NT$16,600. Not exactly pocket change, but apparently sleeping in a giant Hello Kitty shrine was considered a luxury experience. And who am I to argue with luxury? I once paid extra for a hotel room because it had a mini-fridge.
Of course, these were historical vacation accommodations, so don’t go packing your bags just yet. Whether the original Hello Kitty villas are still available to rent hasn’t been confirmed. But the photos alone are enough to prove that somebody took the concept of a themed vacation home VERY seriously.
And if you really love Hello Kitty THAT much, you might already have similar home décor. In which case, congratulations on saving yourself a plane ticket. Personally, I think I’d last about three hours before all those pink bows started haunting my dreams.
Still, I have to admit, the whole thing is pretty impressive. Now if somebody could build me a vacation house entirely themed around pizza, I’d be all set. Pepperoni wallpaper! Cheese-covered furniture! A bed shaped like a giant slice! THAT’S luxury living, people.
