Vying for their spot in the industry, black actors speak out and audiences are listening.

According to authors from Dudethrill.com — as crazy as it sounds, scientists have long postulated that our societal norms better predict the type of pornography we watch, which could also suggest that the type of porn that hits mainstream could, in-turn, impact societal norms.  While there are plenty of activists out there– both of the genuine and armchair varieties– choosing to watch better Black porn videos could be a type of activism that many people would be willing, if not altogether thrilled, to get behind.

“The porn industry definitely has some racially problematic issues. Ones that have been making headlines of late. Particularly those related to negatively charged racial tropes, as well as inequity in pay and treatment of actors.” Say the porn gurus at PornDoe.com. “One of the best ways to fight this as a consumer is just to consume better porn. Choose black porn videos that are produced by ethical companies, or ones that don’t fetishize racial stereotypes.”

The Problem With Black Porn Videos

Some of the biggest problems that the mainstream pornography business faces today is that many black and POC actors are paid far less than their white counterparts. They also have less choice when it comes to scripts and the roles they play. Moreover, there’s less work for black porn actors, seemingly regardless of the fact that it’s a popular genre.

Perhaps even more concerning than the egregious pay gaps and poor choice of roles– are the scripts that black actors are forced to work with. Despite obvious racial overtones and negative stereotypes, many black porn actors feel like they are unable to voice concerns, as the market for their roles is already perilously thin. Concerns grow over this particular type of marginalization, as many producers suggest that the market demand for black porn videos is not as vivacious as that for white porn videos. However, many black actors see this as a supply issue, as opposed to dwindling demand. There are studios like Blacked porn that have their audience growing on a daily basis. Other studios are trying to make a shift as well.

“All black porn videos are considered niche” says one representative for Porndoe that we spoke with, “which has always seemed quite shocking, as the black porn videos featured in our big tit galleries Ebony section perform very well. Which would give credence to the idea that the porn industry itself is shutting out black actors, not the viewers.

Fetishism is Not Activism

But that being said, fetishism has long been confused with activism and normalization– something that the black porn video community does not want to see derail their concerns and genuine problems. Many of the more mainstream black porn videos often feature well-endowed black men with unconscionably tiny white women– a fetish that has all but defined the black porn genre in years passed.

To the point where it became fashionable for white porn actresses to “auction off” their “black virginity”. Where A-list white actors make much greater sums of money than their black co-stars. Becoming more of a marketing campaign in favor of white porn actresses than that of a media boost for black actors. Furthering the negative stereotypes and normalization of black brute male personas in society.  As well as demolishing the number of available roles for black actresses. So if you’re going to watch black porn videos– actually watch black porn videos.

There are a number of black porn stars that are finally breaking out into some really spectacular sub genres and fetishes. Ones that are actually worth a watch. Try and focus on the streams that feature an all black cast, or those that are produced and marketed by an ethical production company. Granted– just watching black porn videos won’t solve the systemic racism that exists within the world, but it’s a place to start.

Embracing Culture Means Embracing Norms

Not dictating them. This is why choosing black directed, or all black porn videos is so incredibly important. As it allows people to tell their story, explain their culture, and define their own desires– without having to kowtow to the mainstream (read: white) agenda. Instead, these types of streams and videos allow others to better understand, normalize, and embrace black culture in pornography.

While the waters can be easily muddied, particularly with porn– as for many it is the taboo of the situation that is most enticing, there are other ways to integrate positive black culture and your favorite fetish. For years, balancing fetish with equality has put the porn industry under fire, however it is something that seems to (albeit slowly) evolve. If you take a look at the porn that was fashionable in the early 90s in the US, or even modern popular porn in Japan, shame genres and misogyny weren’t just obvious– they were best sellers.

However, take a peek on almost any of the major porn streaming channels and you’ll definitely find a more ethical and organic approach to many titles that rake in views. With keywords like bisexual, hentai, and ebony topping charts. As well as non-culturally charged search terms like public, gangbang, anal becoming available with a wider range of actors. Which should signal to both production companies and marketing agencies that our tastes in fantasy are indeed changing. As we start to embrace different cultures, sexual norms, and fetishes that instead lift up marginalized groups, as opposed to just fetishizing them.
