  • Sushi Cats: A Bizarre Photoseries

Tange & Nakimushi Peanuts brings us this photoseries called Sushi Cats. The set features shots of kitties lying on a bed of rice, wearing some kooky-ass costumes and accessories. Like a lobster. Or knitting needles. What is going on here?! I’ll tell you what: magic. Jk jk, it’s a whole lot of WTFery. Sometimes I get the two confused! Last week I thought I was at a magic show. Turns out I was watching two homeless dudes fight in an alleyway. Boy was I embarrassed! And considerably disappointed because I was expecting to see some cool tricks. But back to the cats. Also known as Neko-Sushi, the Japanese photo series was making the rounds online in 2013, and it’s exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. Picture a fluffy little kitty perched on an oversized mound of sushi rice, sometimes wrapped in seaweed and dressed up with props ranging from seafood to completely random household objects. Congratulations! You’ve discovered the weirdest item on a menu that doesn’t actually exist. Except there’s more to this thing than cats pretending to be dinner. According to the creators’ fictional backstory, Sushi Cats are mysterious creatures from another dimension that have supposedly influenced humans throughout history. There are even imaginary researchers studying their existence, and the cats allegedly slip between worlds through gaps in space. So apparently the magic explanation wasn’t that far off after all. Well, except for the part where they’re cats sitting on rice. The creators took the joke seriously enough to produce a video explaining the bizarre history of these supposedly elusive creatures. Because apparently sticking cats on rice wasn’t confusing enough. They needed an entire supernatural origin story, too. And this wasn’t just some random collection of internet cat pictures. Tange & Nakimushi Peanuts developed a whole little world around Neko-Sushi, complete with a mobile game, postcards, photographic prints, and other merchandise. By May 2013, the project was attracting international attention, proving once again that the internet will enthusiastically embrace just about anything involving cats. Especially cats pretending to be food. Of course, the funniest part is how seriously the creators present the whole thing. The mock mythology treats Neko-Sushi like an undiscovered species instead of a series of surreal cat photographs. It’s part art project, part elaborate joke, and part evidence that someone in Japan understands the internet better than the rest of us. The concept even inspired official character merchandise in Japan. In October 2013, manufacturer Kitan Club released a series of six Neko-Sushi-themed pouches featuring characters from the project. That’s right. The fake mythical creatures got real merchandise. Somewhere, an actual cat is probably wondering why it isn’t collecting royalties. So are Sushi Cats magical creatures from another dimension, or just extremely patient felines surrounded by an impressive amount of absurdity? I’m going with magic. Mainly because accepting that someone actually came up with this idea is somehow even harder to believe.
