Iceland is a rugged yet magical country. It’s colourful mountains, spectacular waterfalls, creepy lava fields, and wonderful hot springs, keep the visitors coming back year after year. If you’re thinking about a trip to Iceland, one of the considerations is going to be transport. Here, we explore the options.

Taxi Services in Iceland

There are several taxi services in Iceland, with many based out of Keflavik International Airport. The firms tend to offer services to and from the airport and local destinations around Reykjavik the country’s capital. Regular taxi services are metered and charge at standard rates.

Many of the taxi firms also offer tour services to various gardens and the more popular places around Iceland, including the Blue Lagoon. Others will take you anywhere you want to go on a personalised guided tour.

Bus Services Iceland

Iceland is well served by buses, especially throughout the capital. The city has developed a transport system that ties into visiting museums and other attractions for one price. This offers great value and is an excellent way to embrace Iceland.

The bus services do go further afield and can take you to popular tourist places. You can download an app to plan journeys and to check timetables. All busses are numbered to make it easy for you to find the right bus for your journey.

Iceland Camper Rental

Renting a campervan is the perfect way to see the country. Iceland was built for rugged touring road trips. With a camper van, you have a lot of freedom to discover the country. There are plenty of RV parks where you can park for the night, enjoy the amenities, and get ready for another adventure in this wonderful country.

Many opt for the campervan to see the country, choosing Campervan Reykjavik, as they have a great range of vehicles. This includes 4 x 4s which make the highlands and other F-Roads accessible to you in the summer months. Trekking in these vehicles really brings the country alive, offering a unique driving experience unlike any other.

Given the high number of Iceland camper rental options you can rent a 2 x 2 campervan. This is perfect if you’re planning to stick to the paved routes and take in the Golden Circle and the Ring Road.

Campervans make Iceland a cheaper place to visit as you do not have to worry about renting a hotel, as you take your hotel with you. This can cut expenditure considerably, and it gives you a great sense of adventure when you visit the Iceland Hot Springs and other great attractions.

As well as renting, you can buy second hand campers, which can go pretty cheap if you find a good deal.

Car Rental

Iceland also offers good options for hiring a standard car. Here, you can hire one at the airport, and you’re away. Many firms offer 4 x 4s, giving you access to as much as the country as possible. This, like campervan rental is a good option, especially given the sense of adventure you will have. The hotel price will make it more expensive than hiring a campervan.

So now you have your transport options, where to go?

Gullfoss Waterfall

The Gullfoss Waterfall is one of the most popular sights in the country. It is located on the Hvítá river canyon in south-west Iceland and is part of the Golden Circle tour.

The waterfall is viewed from above, and Iceland authorities have put in several viewing platforms where you can see this iconic vision.

In the summer meltwater from the Langjökull glacier falls 11 metres and then a further 21 metres into a gorge. This two-stage waterfall is a remarkable demonstration of the power and beauty of nature.

Geysir Hot Springs

Geysir hot springs is a region of Iceland where water shoots hundreds of feet into the air. This geothermal area is home to the mighty Strokkur which shoots water 30 metres into the air every few minutes. This is the star attraction, and the whole region is fascinating, especially as it is unlikely you would have seen anything like it elsewhere.

The region has a visitor centre which is packed with information about the region.

Geysir is located in Southwest Iceland is part of the Golden Circle.

North Iceland

North Iceland is packed with great places to explore. This is best done with a 4 x 4 as the better highland places are only reachable with this kind of vehicle. Places to consider include:

Akureyri – This town has some of the oldest buildings in the country and offers quite a lively, vibrant vibe. The town is intriguing in its own right and makes a good base of operations.

Goðafoss Waterfall – Goðafoss translates to ‘Waterfall of the Gods’ and thanks to its curved nature, it is easy to see why. Formed by the Skjálfandafljót river, it is a place of Nordic myth. Here it is believed Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw the pagan god statues into the river and thereby leading the country to embrace Christianity.
