The Rainbow Roller Is A DIY Paint Roller That Paints Rainbows
Instructables user Antzy Carmasaic made a paint roller that paints rainbows. What’s a Rainbow Roller? I’m glad you asked! If you hadn’t, I don’t know what I would say next. Thankfully, the name is unusually helpful: roll it along a surface, and several colors arrive together instead of one.
The original 2015 project turns a familiar decorating tool into something more cheerful. Now, instead of painting the town red, we can paint it with rainbows. Provided that we build the thing correctly and choose a surface we have permission to paint.
A Nyan Cat Idea Made Physical
In a firsthand account of the project, Carmasaic traced the inspiration to the Nyan Cat GIF, with its trailing rainbow. The challenge was to reproduce that effect outside a screen. He described experimenting with sponges and paints before arriving at a roller that behaved the way he had imagined.
That is a literal response to an internet idea. Most people would share the GIF, move on. This project asks what would happen if the colorful trail became an actual mark on paper. The answer requires more assembly than pressing the share button.
How the Paint Reaches the Roller
The creator’s illustrated overview shows an acrylic paint box, a sponge attached to it, and a roller supported by a metal rod. Paint feeds through the sponge to the roller. Carmasaic described using ten colors arranged across the rainbow sequence, allowing neighboring bands to blend as the tool moves.
The mechanism is the interesting part. Putting several colors on a roller might make a stripe, but this design adds a supply of paint above it. That gives the project a relationship between storage, transfer, and motion. It is a painting system, with the colorful result doing the explaining.
Follow the Original Build
Carmasaic shared a tutorial on how to make your own Rainbow Roller. His overview walks through measuring and cutting acrylic, assembling the paint box, attaching the sponge and roller, adding support, then preparing and pouring acrylic paints. It is a construction project before it becomes an art session.
Use the original instructions for dimensions and assembly details. This article introduces the idea rather than supplying a substitute cutting plan. Read the whole build, protect the work area, and test your roller on scrap material. A practice rainbow is easier to accommodate than an accidental permanent one.
A Rainbow Beyond the Screen
The creator also demonstrated applying the effect over printed photographs, connecting it to the rainbow profile pictures shared around the United States marriage equality celebrations in 2015. That dates the experiment within its original internet moment. It also shows why the result is more than a clever alternative to a single paintbrush.
There is appeal in the basic transformation: an ordinary roller becomes a tool for drawing a little strip of spectacle. No weather forecast, sunshine, or passing shower required. Just the materials, some patience, and enough restraint to avoid testing it on every blank wall you pass. With permission first.
