Unicorn Tears Gin Is The Most Magical Booze In All The Land

Now you can supposedly sip the tears of a truly majestic mythical creature. That’s right: Unicorn Tears Gin Liqueur. Firebox introduced this sparkly booze in 2015, giving the drinks cabinet something considerably more dramatic than another bottle with a picture of juniper on it.

No word on whether the imaginary tears involved are happy or sad. Personally, I’m hoping they’re “someone brought snacks” tears. Those are the good ones.

What Is Unicorn Tears Gin Liqueur?

Behind the fairy-tale name is a real gin liqueur containing edible silver pieces. The Spirits Business reported at launch that it came in a 500ml bottle at 40% ABV. The unicorn story is the joke; the shimmering contents are the actual party trick.

And yes, the silver was described as edible. This is a finished drinks product, which saves you the trouble of explaining why you’re standing over a gin bottle with supplies from the craft drawer. Please leave the craft drawer out of cocktail hour.

A Cocktail Called the Cosmopolicorn

The name also lends itself to some extremely committed cocktail puns. Firebox’s serving suggestions have included the Cosmopolicorn, combining Unicorn Tears Gin Liqueur with triple sec and cranberry juice, according to coverage of its 2016 relaunch. Honestly, once you’ve named your drink Cosmopolicorn, a plain paper umbrella feels like a missed opportunity.

The appeal is pretty straightforward: a familiar drinks category, an absurd name, and a little sparkle. No actual unicorn required. Which is convenient, because getting one to cry sounds difficult, and I’d rather spend the evening choosing a glass.
