So you have found the perfect pair of platform boots for you next festival weekend. Since you have clicked on this article you are already keenly aware of the fact that new boots are always extremely uncomfortable. Do not fret! In this article we will provide you with a full proof plan to stay comfortable in your platform boots all weekend long.

Consider Your Foot Shape Before You Buy Boots

Even if your new boots are already on their way, in the future when purchasing boots, consider the shape of your foot. Foot shape and the front design of your boots can have a big impact on how comfortable you will be in them. You might think this is ridiculous but it could save you from painful blisters on your toes. There are three main types of foot shapes: Egyptian, Roman, and Greek.

Feet categorized with an Egyptian structure is best suited to wear oblique, round, and square toed shoes. Feet categorized with an Egyptian structure is best suited to wear round and square toed shoes. Lastly, Feet categorized with a Greek structure is best suited to wear pointed and almond toe shoes. Once you figure out the shape of your feet you will have a higher success rate in buying more comfortable shoes overall.

Break in Your Boots

Once your boots are in your possession, the first thing you must do is break them in. I know it can be tempting to just wear your new shoes out the second you get them. You may be thinking oh I will just wear them out one night and deal with the pain. Trust me as someone who decided to break in her new doc martens during a New York City weekend trip, it is not worth the pain!

Start at Home

Breaking in your new platform boots starts at your home. Put them on and walk around your room. Notice how they feel. Any areas where there is movement or slightly too tight, take note of. This is important for later. One benefit from working from home these days is your sit at your home desk without running around the office. This is the perfect opportunity to break in your new boots. Wear them around your home during the day. Your feet will slowly mold to them just by wearing them alongside small walks throughout your home. This is by far the most important step.

Use Sandpaper

The next step is to deal with the soles of your new platform boots. New boots tend to be extremely slippery, especially if the boots are made with real leather. To avoid slipping and sliding, take a piece of sandpaper and scuff the bottoms. The sound of this may terrify you because well the shoes are new! Trust us, you will want your boots nice and worn in before your festival weekend. If your boots are particularly slippery you can use scissors or a knife to create scratches.

Exclusively Wear Thick Socks

It is important to remember when breaking in any new pair of boots to exclusively wear thick socks with them. The thick socks will help mold the shoe to the shape of your foot. You can also try adding heat. If your new boots are made of leather or faux leather they will react to heat. Put on your thick socks and boots and take a hairdryer to your shoe. The heat will further help mold the shoe to your foot shape. When walking around your home with thick socks remember to stop once the shoes start to feel tight. Take them off and try again the next day. This will prevent painful blisters from forming.

Strut Your Stuff

Lastly, when breaking in your new platform boots at home it is important to remember to learn how to walk in them. Wearing platforms is different from wearing sneakers or flip flops. Your walk should reflect this fact. Remember to practice walking in your home in your thick socks before packing them. You will thank yourself later.

Blisters are a B*tch

Let’s say you did your very best to break in your new platform boots before you next festival. You strutted around your apartment, took a hairdryer to them, and wore your thick socks. Even when you wear a veteran pair of boots out for long enough you still can get blisters. Here are some things you should pack with you for your next festival just in case.

In your fanny pack you should have a multitude of shapes and sizes of moleskine and bandaids. If you tend to get blisters that bubble up make sure to pack a sewing needle, alcohol wipes, and a lighter. Walking around with a blister full of liquid can be even more painful. Take your platform boots off and clean your skin with an alcohol wipe. Sanitize your needle with your lighter. Gently poke the blister and drain it. Clean the area again and immediately place a large bandaid over it. This will give you some relief and speed up the healing process.

Platform boots are awesome and an excellent fashion accessory championed at every music festival. Follow these basic steps to ensure you will stay comfortable throughout your next festival.
