The Cheltenham Festival is often the meeting where the best jumpers in horse racing shine on the biggest stage. The four days consist of 28 races, each of which are lucrative and prestigous.

Here is a look at three horses who look set to be the stars of this year’s meeting at Prestbury Park in Gloucestershire.

Galopin Des Champs

Irish horse Galopin Des Champs cemented his place as one of the best chasers of his generation when he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2023. If he can defend his crown this year, he will join a small group of horses that have managed that feat. The defending champion is the 10-11 favourite in the racing betting with Paddy Power.

The eight-year-old, who is trained by Irish Champion Trainer Willie Mullins, won the Savills Chase on his latest start. As the horse racing results show, he won that Grade One contest by a wide margin of 27 lengths back in December.

Galopin Des Champs has all the attributes needed to establish himself as one of the best 3m chasers in the sport’s history. His jumping is flawless, he has speed and stamina, and he has proven himself to be the best in his division on several occasions. A second Gold Cup triumph would elevate his official rating even higher than his impressive mark of 180.

Constitution Hill

With an unbeaten record and seven Grade One victories to his name, Constitution Hill is the runner many fans are looking forward to seeing the most at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. He is set to line up in the feature race, the Champion Hurdle, on day one.

This will be Constitution Hill’s third appearance at the Cheltenham Festival as he also won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2022 as a novice. Since then, he has proven himself to be one of the greatest 2m hurdlers in history, with his Champion Hurdle success being the highlight, as documented by the BBC.

Nicky Henderson’s stable star was victorious in his sole start this season. He won the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton during the festive period. Once again, he had no trouble in that contest, as he stretched away from his rivals in the closing stages, scoring by nine lengths.

El Fabiolo

Last season’s Arkle Trophy winner El Fabiolo can add his name alongside some of the outstanding 2m chasers that have won the Queen Mother Champion Chase over the last couple of decades. He heads into the Championship race on day two as the horse to beat this year.

In his first run outside of novice company, Willie Mullins’ runner won the Grade Two Hilly Way Chase at Cork back in December. It was enough to earn an official rating of 172, the highest he has received so far in his career.

The seven-year-old has the potential to enter the conversation as one of the best 2m chasers in history, as he is still only seven years old. He is set to take on the leading British horse in the division, Jonbon, at the Cheltenham Festival. El Fabiolo currently has the edge on his rival as he beat him over the same course and distance in 2023.

This year’s Cheltenham Festival is set to take place between 13-16 March and as ever, it is the highlight of the National Hunt calendar in the sport.
