Any gamblers knows the house always wins. But the attraction of gambling, for many, is that some people do get incredibly lucky and strike it big. Not only that, but some people strike it big twice. Or more. On the flipside, gambling can encourage people to take risks in other areas of their life – risks that don’t always turn out so well. These are just a few of the craziest stories to ever happen in the world of gambling.

Most gamblers, even casual players, have daydreamed about hitting a big jackpot. But for some lucky people that turns into reality. Or, they go too far in the pursuit of the dream and end up losing it all. These are the people who experienced the extreme highs and lows gambling has to offer.

Cynthia Brennan Went from Triumph to Tragedy

In January 2000, Las Vegas cocktail waitress Cynthia Jay Brennan was out celebrating a friend’s birthday when she decided to give a Megabucks slot machine at the Desert Inn Casino a go. $25 later she hit a $39.1 million jackpot. However, just two weeks later Brennan was back on the Las Vegas Strip when a drunk driver hit her car. The accident killed Brennan’s sister and left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Brennan, aided by her long-time husband, went on to become a disability activist and public speaker. She used her fortune to honor the memory of her sister by living a life of purpose as best she could.

25 years later and you don’t have to go driving through the busy streets of Las Vegas to try your luck at an online slot jackpot. Just visit the Betway login page, sign up, deposit what you can afford to risk for some fun and away you go. With thousands of slot games, table games and live casino titles available, you’ll find all the fun and excitement of a Las Vegas casino – without the tragedy.

Elmer Sherwin Lived a Charmed Life

One person whose lucky streak continued after his first win, was Las Vegas legend Elmer Sherwin. The World War II veteran hit a $4.6 million slot jackpot win at the Mirage casino in 1989, at the age of 76.

Sixteen years later, in 2005, he hit a second Megabucks jackpot at The Cannery Casino, this time winning $21.1 million. At the age of 92, Sherwin died just two years later – but he used his winnings to set his family up for life while also donating a significant amount to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

World Series of Poker Players Allegedly Collude for Extra Million

The 2025 World Series of Poker saw one of the craziest stories in poker history. It resulted in, for the first time, the winner of a scheduled tournament not being awarded a WSOP Bracelet.

The $1500 Buy-In Millionaire Maker tournament was held at Paris Las Vegas. One of the final two players, Jesse Yaginuma, had previously won an online tournament at rival poker site World Poker Tour, and that promotion granted him an extra million dollars if he won a WSOP event in 2025.

The suggestion is that Yaginuma and his head to head opponent James Carroll secretly orchestrated Yaginuma to win, so that they could split the extra million on top of their tournament prize money. Whilst it wasn’t proven, WSOP declined to award either player a bracelet and it made for one of the most controversial World Series of Poker events of all time.

50 Pence Parlay Becomes £1 Million

In 2008, on the eve of his 60th birthday, English farmer Fred Craggs put down a 50 pence bet at his local branch of the bookmaker William Hill. His throwaway decision, with the change in his pocket, ended up making him £1 million.

Craggs’ bet was on eight horses in eight different races combined. What is known in England as an accumulator or a parlay bet elsewhere.

But Cragg didn’t select horses based on any fancy algorithms, data analysis or even good odds. He simply picked horses he liked the names off and called it a day. Somewhat incredibly, the eight horses (including some big longshots) all won their races – at odds of 2 million to 1.

Had Craggs bet even £1000, he would have bankrupted the bookmaker. But still, £1 million from a £0.50 bet is not a bad payday by any means. To add to the story, one of the horses was called “Isn’t That Lucky?” and another was named “A Dream Come True”.

So, those are just a few of the craziest gambling stories of all time. Just a couple that didn’t make the cut included the New York man who hit two $10 million lottery jackpots in a year, the Las Vegas judge’s son who was caught and sentenced to jail after robbing The Bellagio casino of $1.6 million in chips and the former Supreme Court lawyer who was a secret maniac high stakes poker player.
