Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien is one of the most successful horse racing trainers of all time. The Ballydoyle man has looked after some of the best Flat horses over the last three decades and he could have a new superstar on his hands with City Of Troy.

The three-year-old colt won all three of his assignments last season in impressive style. He goes into his Classic season with an excellent chance of adding his name to the history books in the sport.

Newmarket First Up for Irish Colt

City Of Troy’s first race as a three-year-old will come in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. He is the 4/6 favourite in the racing betting UK for the opening British Classic of the season. That contest takes place over 1m, and he has already shown he has the speed to prevail over the distance.

Many leading horse racing pundits have selected City Of Troy as one of their horse racing tips for the 2,000 Guineas this year as he has been triumphant twice already at the same racecourse. His latest win came in the Group One Dewhurst Stakes. O’Brien’s colt was far too good for his rivals at the Suffolk venue.

The Irishman has won the 2,000 Guineas a record ten times in his career, including with the likes of Camelot, Gleneagles, and Churchill. City Of Troy has achieved just as much as those horses had before their British Classic assignments.

Derby Will Prove Toughest Challenge Yet

If he is to establish himself as one of the greats of his generation, City Of Troy will need to produce a big performance in the Derby at Epsom in June. The Surrey racecourse offers a strong challenge for the best thoroughbreds, as the unique track tests balance, speed, and stamina.

Shergar, Sea The Stars, St Nicholas Abbey, and Auguste Rodin are considered some of the best middle-distance horses of the last 50 years, and each of those horses prevailed at Epsom in the British Classic.

O’Brien, who holds the British Classic record, is confident that City Of Troy will be just as effective over 1m4f, but until he proves himself at Epsom, there will be some doubts about whether he can handle the extra distance.

Triple Crown Bid May Be Considered

It has been 54 years since a horse last won the Triple Crown in the UK. Nijinksy showed his versatility in 1970 to win the 2,000 Guineas, Derby, and St Leger. Camelot came close to matching that feat in 2012, but he fell short in the latter, finishing second in the race at Doncaster.

Should City Of Troy win the 2,000 Guineas and Derby, his connections may consider a shot at the Triple Crown in the St Leger. The third Classic is over the distance of 1m6f, and success in the race would ensure he joins greatness.

Other options this season include the Irish Derby at the Curragh, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in France. The latter is the premier open-age turf contest in Europe.

It is going to be exciting to see what City Of Troy achieves this season and if he can fulfil the high expectations in him ahead of the new campaign.
