One day each and every person will need funeral arrangements. Unfortunately, funerals are an aspect of life that can cut a big chunk out of the bank balance, which is why so many people plan ahead to take the expense stress off their family at an already difficult time. This can include opting for more budget-friendly alternatives which suit personal preferences, faith, or family wishes. The cost of a send-off is estimated at £4,056 for a simple funeral with traditional funerals averaging £8,864 according to insurer Sunlife. This is an excessive amount of money for many families, but if you plan, there are more ways to cut costs and save your family a hefty bill. To help, we’ve broken down funeral types, and average expected expenses below.

Direct Cremation

This is the cheapest funeral available. It covers all the legalities related to death while simply and cheaply taking care of the deceased. There is no service, viewing, or mourners. Instead, the departed individual will be cremated in a simple wooden coffin and returned to loved ones later in a simple urn. Alternatively, the ashes can be scattered on request. In realistic terms, a Direct Cremation is a barebones funeral option which some people prefer for the lack of fuss – think David Bowie – or would rather a celebration of life over a funeral. For others, it’s purely a financial decision as this option can be available from £1500 when planned ahead of time, but average around £2,000.

Simple Funeral

A Simple Funeral is an affordable and fundamental-only funeral. That may sound like a Direct Cremation. There are similarities, but a Simple Funeral is more like a stripped-back Traditional Funeral in many ways, without the scale and fuss. This may look like no flowers or a simple casket to reduce costs. A Simple Funeral starts from around £2,500, but the UK average is £4,056.

Modern Funeral

While the “modern” title is open to interpretation, it’s often signified by what mourners wear, the venue selected, or the procession vehicle that may be out of the ordinary or offbeat. But rather than simply shunning the old for new, a Modern Funeral is more about choice and finding ways for personal taste and tradition to coexist. What’s most critical is an expressive send-off about the individual person and life. A modern funeral director lacks the prescriptive nature that traditional arrangements often have and will act as a facilitator for that individuality to shine. This type of funeral starts at around £4,056 and goes up depending on the desired arrangements.

Traditional Funeral

Many funeral services are still traditional faith-based events, although non-religious traditional funerals can be held too. These affairs are usually more extravagant and prescriptive, with religious rites being performed and the extra aspects often associated with a traditional send-off. This means costs are often higher for a Visiting, Service, Funeral Procession, and Wake. A traditional funeral averages at £8,864, with prices increasing depending on the arrangements.

With Covid-19 not entirely eradicated, it is still possible that the number of mourners at funerals will be limited again. Funeral Live Streaming has proven itself to be a cost-effective solution to allow mourners to take part in the funeral from home. There is a range of professional funeral live streaming services available in most countries today. Depending on the package and coverage you budget for an additional cost of around 1000$.
