You could re-emerge from the COVID-19 crisis with a full case of the Quarantine 15 and nobody would judge you.

This has been one of the most collectively challenging times we have ever faced as a society. Many of us have lost our favourite activities, our social rituals, or even our jobs. Motivation to do much of anything is low. We all just kind of want to crawl into bed and hibernate until this is all over.

Without sounding obnoxiously optimistic, there is a hidden opportunity here. Once you’ve spent sufficient time mourning the life you used to have, you do have a chance to lay the foundation for a better one.

Here’s how you can do it.

Address Your Outer Self

Is there something about your appearance that you’ve always wanted to change? Maybe you’ve never loved the look of your nose, or wished you could lose 10 lbs. Now is the time to do something about it. You can see a change in the mirror, and then soak up the looks on people’s faces when they see you again for the first time in months.

This is one of the reasons that world class plastic surgeons are incredibly busy and experiencing a mini-boom right now. People are seizing this opportunity to discretely get a liposuction procedure or a facelift while they’re working from home.

They’re also finding new ways to workout at home with no weights or exercise equipment.

Find a New Way to Read and Learn

There is a huge percentage of society that absolutely loves and relishes the chance to settle down with a good book. However, it’s not for everyone.

If you’re not a big reader, you may simply not love the ritual of reading. Some people don’t relax by sitting still. And just because you fall into that group, doesn’t mean you should be deprived of an entire universe of enlightenment and entertainment from books.

Consider switching to audiobooks instead of music on your bike rides, runs, or drives. If you can read a book on your own terms while you’re being active, this could very easily become your new favourite time of the day.

Reconnect With Family and Friends

We’re all being kept apart by travel restrictions and social distancing. But that doesn’t mean that we need to fall out of touch.

Does your after-dinner routine consist of logging onto Netflix? Consider trading it for Facetime or Skype. Go out of your way to set up quick chats with seemingly-long-lost loved ones. They will appreciate it too!

As much as we may feel powerless these days, it’s important for you to know that you can control the person that you become in the face of all this adversity and isolation.

Making the decision to work on yourself, while remaining kind to yourself, can help you build great habits that will shape the rest of your life.
