Whether you’re planning an epic night and want to start it off with an ice-breaker to loosen up your guests, or you and your friends are looking forward to ringing in the New Year while having a (relatively) chill night, there are plenty of party board games that emphasize fun over strategy and can lay the foundation for a night you will never forget, or never remember.

If you don’t have any of the games below, head over to your favourite online board game store in Canada and make sure you stock up on the most popular party board game titles. Once you do, they’ll always be there, ready to party when you are.

These games are specifically-designed for player interaction and don’t involve deep analysis or strategy, but they do challenge you, get your competitive juices flowing and add excitement to any night.

Codenames

Table of Contents

Codenames is one of those games you can pretty much pull out at any gathering and draw a crowd of spectators who can also join the fun. Cards with random but somewhat related words on them are laid out on a table, and one person from each team, the Spymaster, looks at a key card of the words they must get their teammates to pick by giving them a one-word clue; before the enemy picks all of their words.

The idea is to pick a hint that applies to several of your words and take multiple spaces in a round. But watch out; your hint could cause your teammates to pick an enemy card, or worse, the card covering the assassin, which means you automatically lose the game.

Decrypto

From spying to code-breaking, Decrypto is a more confrontational approach to the same theme. This time, not only are you sending cryptic hints you hope your teammates will understand, but your opponents are also listening and are trying to guess your code as well.

Each team has their own Decrypto screen with worded cards inside four numbered slots. A player on each team receives a card with a three-digit code they must get their teammates to guess by giving them a hint that relates to the words in each location. However, that hint can’t be too obvious, or their opponent will guess it and steal the game.

Just One

Just One is a cooperative game where players all work together to try and beat the game, yet often end up beating themselves. One player is separated from the rest while a word is chosen. The rest of the team then write a one-word clue on a dry-erase card. The guesser is shown all the clues at once and has one guess at the word.

The problem is, if any two (or more) players write the same hint, that hint is eliminated. So, it’s not as straightforward as picking the best hint, you must think of a word you don’t think anyone else will pick but that is still helpful, while wondering if everyone else is doing the same thing. This means you are constantly second and third-guessing yourself, but you have a blast while doing it as the hints are revealed.
