Dancers Doing Real Life Stuff
Photographer Jordan Matter brings us Dancers Among Us, a photo series showing professional dancers doing everyday stuff. Well, everyday stuff if your idea of catching the subway involves flying across the platform in a full split. The pictures turn shopping, working, showering, and ordinary city errands into acrobatic performances. As you can see, these people are extremely talented. I used to think touching my toes was impressive. Apparently, I have been aiming way too low.
The fun comes from the mismatch. Most of us stand in line, carry groceries, and try not to trip over the curb. Matter puts dancers in those same situations and catches them bending, leaping, or stretching as if gravity signed a special agreement with them. The result is both beautiful and a little suspicious. Are these people missing a few vertebrae? Because I would appreciate an explanation before trying anything remotely similar.
Ordinary Places, Completely Ridiculous Dance Moves
One of the series’ earliest scenes featured a dancer dressed like a commuter, apparently rushing across a Times Square subway platform with a spectacular airborne split. The artist’s official gallery also shows performers posed in streets, stores, and other familiar spaces. Those surroundings matter. A high kick onstage is impressive; the same move next to someone waiting for a train makes you stop and stare. The dancers look as if they have accidentally wandered into a world where everyone else has forgotten how to dance.
There is a real sense of humor in the photographs. A pose that might look formal under stage lights becomes gloriously strange when the dancer is carrying shopping bags or dealing with normal daily business. The subjects are not just showing off their flexibility; they are telling tiny stories with their bodies. Meanwhile, I struggle to bend down and pick up a dropped pen without making an embarrassing noise. We clearly belong to different athletic species. Watching them turn everyday errands into graceful movements is enough to make my usual walk to the grocery store feel like a missed opportunity.
How Jordan Matter Made Everyday Life Look Magical
Matter has explained that his young son’s excitement about ordinary things helped inspire the project. He wanted to capture the feeling of being fully alive in an otherwise routine moment. The photos later became the 2012 book Dancers Among Us: A Celebration of Joy in the Everyday. The publisher describes how the first subway shoot helped establish the idea, with a member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company dressed in normal commuter clothes. That sounds like a wonderfully unusual morning for everybody on the platform.
And before you assume someone Photoshopped the impossible bits, the publisher says the photos relied on real dancers rather than digital tricks or trampolines. That does not make the movements look any less impossible. It just means the credit belongs to some exceptionally skilled humans and a photographer with excellent timing. Go enjoy the pictures, then return to your regular life. I will be over here congratulating myself for successfully climbing the stairs without pulling anything.
Don’t think the shower scene is safe. Too slippery! Yikes.
Is the girl in the beer garden not wearing any underwear?! :O
Other than that, these photos are fantastic!
I love the two people kissing on the beach. Very romantic.
my second fav, the surfer my first girl with the apple.. WOW!
up skirt perv
wow, they have some ups.
i bet that guy in the shower slipped on his landing
Hope the guy in the first picture has excellent medical insurance as that couldn’t have ended well……..
Stone Street Tavern, FiDi NYC!
omg LOL this is hystarical mai fav is definatley the one where the dude was running to the subway XD
As a dancer I often jump in the shower, but imma have to try some of those make out poses, never occurred to me…
This reminds me of the Babysitter’s Club book/movie’s Jesse who likes to dance as she lives life.
Very impressive series! Fantastically Extreme to the Max! None of us average Arthurs or Marthas could ever achieve the heights or extensions than these human work of arts! Thats why we adore the sight of them! Hope this series continues…
awesome, art at work!
My fave: on pointe in the coal pile. Not alone, I see.
Great series, bravo !!!
Wow, wow, wow! Yes, would love to have the ability and the energy.
My fav is the guy crossing the street…..that whole pose looks so natural….I have no idea how he managed to land back up…..amazing!
The guy flying in the air across the street ! I just cant imagin HOW he landed on his feet ! so Impressive!
He probably just rolled when he hit the ground. Or tumbled. Or his partner caught him in some way. It’s pretty fantastic looking. I think that’s my fave.
FANTASTIC!!! the poses, the flexibility and the quality of the focus on each picture ! SO IMPRESSIVE! i wouldent mind having one or two hanging on my wall 8<)
Humans in motion are often breath-taking.
Just looove the waitress in the beer garden… and have a wild guess what i would love doing YES !! 6969 call me
The pictures are gorgeous! I cannot fathom how some of these were done, let alone caught on film.
WOW!!!! These pics are as neat as the people in them,,,,simply beautiful. I love everything about them…”Kudos to you and five finger snaps”
More dancing weenie please!
what’s you’re problem?
I wanted to see more penis.
kissing and dancing in the water …so cude….i loveit!!
i like the first one. Girl, in air, holding tree, smelling flowers. 2nd fav. couple crossing street where he is horizontal behind her.
Wow…Amazing…
i should proofread better. me speling kinda sux
from the perspective of art for the sake of art, these images are really cool.
the heading however led me to think of more images like the shopper; dancers being overtly dancer like in every day situations. Not pointe shoes in dirt with blue jeans or serving drinks.
noting against ballet. one can exemplify ballet without being on pointe.
last one “WTF DID I MARRY?”
Love these! Gives a clear measure of how amazingly more fit dancers are than the rest of us! Love you all!
Now that is Flippin’ AWESOME!!!
Thank you, Jordan Matter and Brittany High~!
they should have more than just ballet dancers…. that can get boring
you get boring
There are only two that are clearly ballet dancers… some of the others are less obvious, they could be jazz, modern, or even ballroom dancers… but they all definitely have excellent technique
I have not enjoyed pictures like this for a long time. They were beautiful and funny and poignant, everything art is supposed to be. Art in Real life-Hell yeah!
that first guy must have went to the hospital after slipping coming back down..Hell no he had slippery ass body soap in his hand and hes messing wth water…jus saying its nutty lmao
I would think the blue-ish thing at the bottom might be one of those have better grip in the shower pad for him to land on.
you’re nutty
I thought this at first, but the shower head isn’t on and it isn’t ‘steamy’ enough. I am assuming that they used body oil to give the appearance of water. So I am sure he was quite safe 😉
it has to be photoshopped people ..if that porcelain was wet…he’s dead !
I was just thinking the same thing.
there’s probably just a rubber matt on the floor of the tub…
jumping in a porcelin tub is safer with body oil than with water?
If you look to the top of the shower photo you will see he is holding onto something. Impressive though
yeah, that shower head is on too. he ain’t faking it.
Not holding on…giving the index and pinky finger up, rock out, hand gesture… He’s totally rocking out in the shower…shampoo bottle microphone and all!
Maybe he has adhesive ducks to keep him safe!
Whoa! WOW!!!
I dig the couples one 😉 totally sexy and fresh
Which couples one? There are three, at least.
My favorite is the simple ballet shoe pose in construction work mode.
Agreed. Same here.
That picture reminds me so much of Flashdance. Its my favorite out of all of them.
My favourite too!
Mine too, and the first one -that is hilarious 😀
I really love this series!
I only wish there was a *little* more variation in the posing. But that’s being nitpicky!
yeah, pretty anal
Wow these are pretty cool!
