Bloody Mary Beef Jerky Straws

You know the whole “hair of the dog” thing? That old idea that the only cure for feeling bad about drinking too much is drinking some more? Well, nothing says questionable morning-after decisions quite like a Bloody Mary. And what could possibly make that tomatoey drink even better? MEAT. Or, more specifically, A BEEF JERKY STRAW.

How Benny’s Bloody Mary Beef Straw Worked

That’s right, Benny’s Bloody Mary Beef Straw was an actual edible straw with a hole running allllllllll the way through it. Instead of sipping your drink through boring old plastic, you could suck down that spicy tomato juice through a tube made of seasoned meat. In 2012, the original beef version was advertised as 7.75 inches long, made with beef and spices, and designed specifically for Bloody Marys. Whoever came up with this deserves a round of applause. Or maybe just another Bloody Mary.

Who Invented Benny’s Beef Jerky Straw?

The brilliant and slightly ridiculous idea came from Ben Hirko, who first thought of turning a meat snack into a drinking straw while tending bar. Instead of treating the beef stick as a garnish sitting awkwardly on the rim of a glass, Benny’s made it part of the actual drinking experience. And the best part? Ohohohoooo, the BEST part is that while you’re drankin’ your drank, the meaty lil sucker soaks up some of that Bloody Mary goodness. By the time you finish your cocktail, you’ve got yourself a spicy, boozy snack.

What Happened to Benny’s Meat Straws?

And this wasn’t just some weird food invention that disappeared after one internet laugh. The business was acquired by DAS Companies in 2014, and Benny’s later introduced pork-based versions of its meat straws. So while the original beef jerky straw was already pretty wild, the idea actually developed into a bigger novelty food business. A straw you can drink through and eat afterward? I don’t know whether to call that genius or completely ridiculous. Probably both.
