These Pizza Wedding Photos Will Make You Hungry For Love

Photographer Marcy Harris brings us these photos from a pizza wedding. What’s a pizza wedding? In this case, it’s a celebration of the union between one human bride and her pizza groom. That’s right, somebody took the whole ‘If you love pizza so much, why don’t you marry it?’ thing literally.

I’d be lying if I hadn’t considered it myself. A partner who arrives in a cardboard box and improves an evening does have certain advantages. This romance, however, belongs to a playful photo shoot that was making the rounds in January 2017.

How a Pizza Became the Groom

The bride was Christine Wagner. According to the photographer’s first-person account on Bored Panda, the idea began when Christine posted a Facebook picture wearing her grandmother’s vintage wedding gown and joked about marrying pizza. The photographer suggested turning that caption into actual pictures. Christine agreed, and the shoot was on.

That is the setup behind the wedding language. These photographs stage a romance with food; they aren’t documentation of an ordinary marriage ceremony. The silly premise is exactly what makes them work. A familiar wedding pose suddenly becomes much harder to take seriously when one participant has pepperoni.

Something Borrowed and Something Cheesy

The props committed to the bit. The pizza wore a Pokémon bow tie, and a Ring Pop supplied the wedding ring. The photographer’s account describes a pepperoni pizza from Cristy’s Pizza in Baltimore and a white barn on Christine’s family farm as part of the scene.

Look at the box portrait: Christine holds the pizza box as though she is introducing a spouse. Her lace dress, the heart decorations, and that bow tie all contribute to the joke. The groom may be boxed in, but at least he dressed for the occasion.

Wedding Portraits With an Extra Topping

The photographs borrow the visual language of wedding portraits and let the pizza interrupt it. The contrast is the attraction: a dressed bride gives a takeout dinner the kind of attention normally reserved for someone waiting at the altar. It is wonderfully too much.

One portrait casts the pizza box as a surprisingly formal companion. Another portrait shows Christine lying beside the open pizza box, still in her wedding dress. The pizza gets its close-up. Apparently, even an edible groom deserves a place in the album before anybody starts dividing up the slices.

Hungry for Love and Possibly Dinner

This was a staged photography story, so the fun lies in the images and their elaborate commitment to a ridiculous idea. Contemporary coverage credited Harris and identified Christine; the original Incredible Things post joined in with its own hungry enthusiasm. No relationship advice needs to be extracted from the mozzarella.

Still, there is something satisfying about taking a throwaway joke this seriously. A dress, a pizza, and a photographer willing to follow the idea were enough to make a memorable little romance. Now somebody pass a plate. Being hungry for love is one thing; watching the groom go cold is another.
