See All The Phases Of The Moon As You Drink Out Of This Cup
Meet the Moon Glass, a ceramic cup that shows you the phases of the moon as you drink. Fill it to the brim and you get a full moon. Keep sipping and it shrinks to a half moon, then a crescent, before disappearing. Very cool! And unlike the actual moon, you can fill this one back up whenever you like.
Seoul-based design studio Tale came up with the Moon Glass, which was getting attention back in 2012. There’s no screen, special ink, or tiny astronaut trapped inside. The trick is a cleverly sculpted slope inside the cup. As the liquid level drops, the exposed shape changes, giving the impression of a waning moon.
The designers made black and white versions in two sizes. The black cup was intended for cloudy drinks such as makgeolli or nigori sake, which make the pale moon shape stand out. The white version was meant for colored beverages such as tea. Milk can work nicely in a dark cup, too. Suddenly staring into your drink counts as appreciating design instead of zoning out at the table.
Of course, the Moon Glass is more of a little visual trick than a portable astronomy lesson. The moon in your cup changes because you are drinking, not because the Earth, moon, and sun have decided to coordinate with your beverage. Still, it’s pretty clever for something that looks like an ordinary ceramic cup.
Not as cool as the actual moon, of course, but then again, what is? Oh, you’re right — the sun. The sun is chill AF! Figuratively, of course. Literally, well, not so much. I’m gonna stop talking now k byeeee!
