Chair Paintings You Can Sit In IRL
Japanese design studio YOY brings us chair paintings you can actually sit on. They’re using some serious eye trickery if you ask me. Called CANVAS, the collection looks like framed pictures of furniture. Then someone takes a seat, and suddenly the artwork has a job beyond looking good.
How Can You Sit on a Chair Paintings?
According to YOY’s project description, each piece has a frame made from wood and aluminum, covered with elastic fabric printed with a canvas texture and an image of a chair. The frame leans against a wall for use. The stretchy surface gives way when someone sits, turning the apparently flat picture into a usable seat.
So the “painting” is printed fabric stretched over a purpose-built structure. Important distinction. Please don’t take this as permission to sit on whatever framed picture happens to be closest. Your landscape watercolor has enough going on.
A Stool, an Armchair, and a Sofa
YOY developed three versions: a stool, an armchair, and a sofa. Each uses the same visual trick at a different scale. The studio also notes that the armchair and sofa designs were commercialized by British furniture and lighting brand Innermost.
You can sit down and become part of the artwork! Jk jk, you can sit down and be glad you’re not standing. I mean, who do you think you are—Mona Lisa or something? Although “please take a seat” becoming a small optical illusion is a pretty good party trick.
