Disability is one of the most misunderstood topics today, and employers need to understand what accommodations an employee with a disability should receive. Here are six accommodations a company should provide and how they benefit the employee.

  1. Providing an Employee with Assistive Devices as Necessary

Some employees might require an assistive device that their employer can provide to support them in completing the tasks needed to do their job. For example, if a person is in a wheelchair, the company can provide them with a ramp or elevator to help them get around the office. No matter what assistive devices the employee needs, it is often a good idea for the employer to provide them with an item that makes it easier for them to complete their job.

  1. Job Restructuring and Schedule Adjustments

If employees cannot complete their job duties because of their disability, they might still be able to complete the bulk of the work. If so, it might be a great idea to restructure their job so that they can do more with less stress. An employee may be unable to work particular shifts in a specific position, for example. Still, they may be able to move into a more accessible position with a different schedule.

  1. Modifying Work Policies or Workplace Rules

There are many situations where employees may receive assistance from their employer, but the company will not modify or change any policies or rules. If an employee asks for help, the company might be able to alter these policies or regulations to make them more livable for the employee and the employer. For example, if a person must travel through various physical barriers on the job, their employer can rule that they are no longer required to do so.

  1. Providing Job Coaching

If an employee is having trouble completing their job due to a disability, their employer might be able to provide them with a coach or mentor who can help them complete the tasks. This type of assistance can go a long way towards helping that person to stay on track and remain successful in their position.

  1. Modifying Performance Evaluation Criteria or Performance Reviews

Sometimes an employee may be unable to complete the job due to their disability, and the company will not change the performance evaluation criteria. If so, the company might be willing to modify its performance review process so that this person can continue in their position.

  1. Providing Additional Time off for Medical Reasons

Some employees might need additional time off due to their inability to perform specific tasks on the job. If so, they might want the company to provide them with extra time off so that they can recover from their disability. This accommodation type is subject to employee approval, and the amount of time needed for recovery will vary for each person.

Employees with disabilities are not always given the reasonable accommodations they need. If a person has a disability, it is important that they are aware of their rights. They must communicate with their employer to get the help and support they need. Click to learn more about the laws and regulations surrounding disability employment and accommodations.
