  • Drinking On The Go: Powdered Beer

Pat’s Backcountry Beverages is a company looking to sell you powdered beer for on-the-go type trips where you can’t be lugging around a backpack full of brewskis. But that’s my M.O.! Okay, technically it’s not powdered beer. It’s a concentrated liquid that comes in little pouches. Add water, use the company’s portable carbonator to give it some fizz, and BOOM! You’ve got yourself a beer in the middle of nowhere. No heavy six-pack required. Then, glug glug glug and pass out in the woods or the side of the road or whatever. Or maybe just enjoy your beverage without becoming a cautionary tale for the local park ranger. The technology behind the product is pretty complicated. Lots of science involved. And by science I mean magic. Booze magic. Eeeeee, that’s my favoritest kind! The invention came from Patrick Tatera, an outdoorsman and homebrewer who wanted a way to bring beer on backpacking trips without hauling all that extra weight. Rather than making regular beer and simply drying it out, Tatera developed a process that involved brewing with very little water to create a concentrated alcoholic liquid. The idea was to preserve the flavor and aroma of beer while making it easier to carry. The portable carbonator was another part of the appeal. Instead of carrying fizzy drinks around all day, you brought the concentrate, a reusable bottle, and the ingredients needed to carbonate the water. Suddenly, your backpack wasn’t full of cans, and you didn’t have to haul all those empties back down the mountain. Of course, the beer still needed actual water. So the whole thing worked best when you had a safe drinking-water supply available. This was backpacking convenience, not a magical way to create beer out of thin air. Disappointing, I know. And if beer wasn’t your thing, Pat’s also offered concentrated sodas, including cola, root beer, and ginger flavors. Contemporary reporting confirmed those were part of its early lineup. The original article also mentioned powdered wine, but I couldn’t verify a comparable wine product being offered at the time, so that’s one bit of booze magic we’ll leave out. nd here’s the best part: the whole thing actually made it beyond the drawing board. The beer concentrates were available commercially for a period, although their current availability hasn’t been established. So, no, it wasn’t exactly powdered beer. But being able to turn a little packet of concentrated brew into a pint of beer in the wilderness? That’s still pretty impressive. Booze magic, people. BOOZE MAGIC.
