The last thing you want in a new car is reliability issues – you want a car you can drive not have the mechanic making repair after repair!

The biggest consideration that American car buyers have in purchasing a new or used car today is its reliability. JD Power have been looking at vehicles’ reliability issues for the last 33 years and have an index of cars that ranks them on reliability in nine areas:

  • Climate
  • Driving assistance
  • Driving experience
  • Exterior
  • Features/controls/displays
  • Infotainment
  • Interior
  • Powertrain
  • Seats

They also look at the driver satisfaction around the vehicles. As such where it comes to buying a new or used sedan, the JD Power rankings are a great first place to check.

New 2022 Sedan Cars

Most Reliable New Car – Nissan Maxima

Though a bit dull to drive, the 2022 Nissan Maxima has the best ratings for reliability across all new cars sold in the USA. It has a 300HP V6 engine that gives great acceleration (though can be poor on fuel economy). Its overall build quality is rated as 93/100 by JD Power, meaning you probably won’t be using the Lemon Law against the manufacturer!

Most Reliable Sports Sedan – Dodge Challenger

Coming with engines ranging up to 807HP, the Dodge Challenger is a muscle car that means business! Fun to drive and very nice to look at, this is also ranked very well by JD Power with a rating of 88/100.

While thirsty on fuel, and not exactly easy with carbon emissions, the Dodge Challenger is a mean looking car that will please the eye of many!

Best Small Luxury Sedan – BMW 4 Series

Rated by JD Power at 87/100 the BMW 4 Series luxury small sedan is fun to drive and expensively fitted out. You will find a lot of gadgets and driver aids in the cabin. Coming with engines ranging up to a 503HP turbo-6 powerplant, it has great acceleration.

BMW have a reputation for making solid, reliable cars and you will find very few defective vehicles made by them on the road today. The downside to this is that BMW is a luxury brand and you will pay $$$ to get a new one!

Used Cars in Brief

JD Power have an index of three year old cars too, which show the best used makes and models on US roads today. David Amodeo, director of global automotive at J.D. Power said, “Some automakers are performing much better than others at preventing problems from occurring. These problems include the vehicle’s mechanicals, exterior and interior—but also infotainment systems, driver assistance systems and all the other electronic systems in today’s vehicles.”

Where it comes to used sedans, the best sedans on the market today are by the Korean automakers Kia, Genesis and Hyundai that have three of the top four rankings of three-year-old cars on US roads. Using that tip as a first step then you may be able to make your decision as to the best sedan to buy today.
