24 Awesome Donuts To Help You Celebrate National Donut Day
Happy National Donut Day! Yes, National Donut Day is a real thing. For real. And what better way to celebrate than by looking at donuts that are almost too awesome to eat? ALMOST. From adorable animals and rainbow creations to donuts inspired by your favorite movie and TV characters, these treats take the whole donut thing to another level. Check out these 24 awesome donuts and then go getchu some!
Fun fact: National Donut Day falls on the first Friday of June. The Salvation Army started the tradition in 1938 to honor the volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The 2015 celebration took place on June 5, so this collection was right on time for a whole lot of sugary goodness.
Mustache Donuts
Donuts with mustaches? Why not! Nothing says sophisticated snacking quite like giving your breakfast a little facial hair. The original find was credited to Run Eat Play, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine a better way to start National Donut Day than with a donut sporting a fancy mustache.
Adorable Animal Donuts
Okay, this is where things get almost TOO cute. Japanese donut maker Ikumi Mama became known for turning ordinary donuts into adorable little animals. Cats, pandas, and other critters were part of the shop’s creations. Four of the animal donut picks in the original roundup were credited to @Ikumi_mama. These are the kinds of treats that make you feel guilty about taking the first bite. Not guilty enough to stop, obviously.
California Donuts also earned two spots in the original animal donut lineup. Because apparently it’s not enough for a donut to be covered in frosting and sprinkles anymore. Now it needs a face and a whole personality. And you know what? We’re completely okay with that.
Rainbow Donuts
Why settle for one color when your donut could have ALL the colors? Rainbow Donuts bring the bright, sugary fun, and this original pick was credited to California Donuts. It’s basically a little celebration you can eat. If this doesn’t make you smile, you might need another donut.
Donuts That Look Like Other Foods
Donuts pretending to be other foods? That’s just unnecessarily confusing, and we LOVE it. Imagine reaching for what looks like a completely different snack, only to discover it’s secretly a donut. The original collection included five examples credited to Foodbeast, California Donuts twice, Run Eat Play, and Paint The Gown Red. Because apparently being a donut isn’t enough anymore. You’ve gotta have a secret identity too.
Totoro Donuts
Fans of Studio Ghibli’s adorable forest spirit Totoro know he’s already ridiculously cute. Turn him into a donut, and things get even better. This original pick was credited to Always Me Clothing. I don’t know whether to admire it, photograph it, or eat it. Okay, definitely eat it. But maybe take a picture first.
Pokemon Donuts
Gotta eat ’em all! Pokemon Donuts combine two things that probably shouldn’t work together quite this well: cute little creatures and delicious fried dough. The original find came via Reddit, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that makes choosing your favorite Pokemon even harder. Sorry, buddy. You’re getting eaten.
Cookie Monster Donuts
Cookie Monster loves cookies. We get it. But who says he can’t enjoy a donut every once in a while? The original Cookie Monster Donut pick was credited to Varsity Donuts, and the idea of turning everyone’s favorite cookie enthusiast into another sugary treat is pretty hilarious. C is for cookie, D is for DONUT!
Mini Donuts
Regular donuts are great, but mini donuts? SO CUTE. They’re tiny, they’re adorable, and you can probably eat a whole bunch before realizing you’ve consumed the equivalent of several regular donuts. Not that we’re counting. This little find was originally credited to Unconfidential Cook. Small donuts, big happiness.
Disney Donuts
Disney characters are already everywhere, so why not put them on donuts too? These themed treats bring a little cartoon magic to dessert. The original pick was credited to Foodiggity, and honestly, we’re surprised nobody has tried to turn every single animated character into a donut. Or maybe they have. The internet is a weird place.
Chewbacca Donut
A long time ago, in a bakery far, far away… somebody decided Chewbacca needed to become a donut. And you know what? Fair enough. A Star Wars-inspired pastry is exactly the sort of ridiculous thing we can get behind. The original find was credited to Nerdist. May the frosting be with you.
Adventure Time Donuts
What time is it? DONUT TIME! Adventure Time has never been short on colorful characters, so turning that cartoon world into edible treats feels like a pretty natural move. Another original pick credited to Nerdist, these donuts are exactly the kind of thing that would make a cartoon-loving dessert fan ridiculously happy.
Ghost Busters Donuts
Who you gonna call? THE DONUT SHOP. Ghostbusters-inspired donuts bring a little supernatural fun to snack time. The original find was credited to PopSugar, and the thought of turning spooky movie characters into sweet treats is pretty much the opposite of terrifying. Unless, of course, somebody eats the last one before you get there.
Spongebob Donuts
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Somebody who apparently looks pretty good as a donut. SpongeBob-inspired donuts bring a whole lot of cartoon silliness to the dessert table. This original pick was credited to Look Tasty. Just imagine Patrick’s reaction if somebody handed him one. Actually, he’d probably eat it before anyone could explain what it was.
Lord of the Rings Donuts
One donut to rule them all! Lord of the Rings-inspired donuts are a pretty great combination of fantasy fandom and delicious snacks. The original find came via the Daily Dot. We can only imagine what would happen if someone offered Gollum a precious little ring-shaped pastry. Actually, never mind. He probably wouldn’t share.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Donuts
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles love pizza, but we’re guessing they wouldn’t turn down a donut either. These turtle-inspired treats bring a little extra green to the bakery counter. The original roundup credited this pick to KIhtmaine HObbies. Heroes in a half shell? More like heroes in a delicious donut shell. COWABUNGA!
