Meat Wrapping Paper Makes Gifts Look Like Raw Steak

Remember Gift Couture, the company who Kickstarted (that’s a word!) their way to bringing us Cheeseburger Wrapping Paper? Me too. It was delicious.

Now they’re back with a new meaty food-themed wrapping paper. But this time around? This time around they know exactly what they’re doing. They skipped all the crazy stuff like lettuce and tomatoes or whatever and only brought the stuff that matters: THE MEAT.

Well, THE MEAT, a cutting board to cut THE MEAT, and some butcher paper to wrap THE MEAT. I like the direction this is heading. Finally, a way to make somebody think you got them a big, juicy steak for their birthday when it’s actually just another pair of socks. SURPRISE! Hope you like disappointment!

Gift Couture’s Steak Wrapping Paper

Created by designers Sarah Fay and Justin Colt, Gift Couture’s Steak Wrapping Paper was a coordinated gift wrap set launched on Kickstarter in July 2013. The concept was simple: wrap your present in paper that looks like a slab of raw beef, then complete the illusion with butcher-shop accessories. Because nothing says “Happy Birthday!” quite like handing somebody what appears to be several pounds of uncooked meat.

The original set included two 25-by-21-inch sheets of steak-pattern wrapping paper, a matching cutting-board sheet, white butcher paper, twine, a meat tray, and two gift labels. That’s right, even the meat tray was part of the package. These people were COMMITTED to the bit.

And this wasn’t Gift Couture’s first trip to the fake-food gift-wrapping rodeo. Their earlier Cheeseburger Wrapping Paper used coordinated designs resembling a hamburger bun, patty, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. Basically, an entire fast-food meal disguised as birthday presents. Except you couldn’t eat any of it. Which seems unnecessarily cruel, if you ask me.

A Kickstarter Success With Extra Meat

The steak-themed project wasn’t just a ridiculous idea, either. Its 2013 Kickstarter campaign attracted 348 backers and raised $10,037, exceeding its original $8,000 funding goal. Apparently there were hundreds of people who looked at realistic raw-meat wrapping paper and said, “YES. TAKE MY MONEY.”

And you know what? I respect that. A beautifully wrapped gift is nice and all, but a gift that looks like something stolen from a butcher’s refrigerator? That’s the kind of presentation people remember. Possibly while calling the health department, but still.

Next time around they’re gonna bring us the ultimate meaty food wrapping paper: hot dogs on a stick. Just watch, I’m calling it!

Until then, I’ll be over here trying to figure out how to wrap an actual steak in wrapping paper that looks like steak. MEATCEPTION. Somebody stop me before I get hungry and eat the present.
