I’ll Take One Baby Sized Burrito Please

It’s hard to tell from a picture just how big your burrito is going to be unless there’s something next to it for scale. A fork? Helpful. A newborn baby? Okay, now you have my attention.

Gorditos in Seattle is known for its Baby Burrito, a name that requires some clarification. This isn’t a tiny burrito. It’s a burrito the restaurant compares to the size of an actual newborn. Suddenly, “I’ll just have one” sounds considerably less restrained.

How the Baby Burrito Photos Started

According to Gorditos’ own history, a customer photographed his newborn beside the Burrito Grande. Other customers contributed their own comparisons, creating the restaurant’s baby burrito photo wall. Forget a banana for scale. This lunch apparently needed a birth announcement.

How’d they get so many babies to pose with their food? Free burritos certainly helped. Coverage from 2013 described an offer for parents who allowed their babies to be photographed beside the enormous burritos. Check with the restaurant about any current offer before recruiting your newborn as a lunch model.

What’s Inside the Burrito Grande?

The restaurant’s menu describes two large flour tortillas filled with a choice of protein, black beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, and fresh chunky salsa. So yes, there’s a substantial lunch behind the photo opportunity.

Hopefully this measuring system catches on everywhere. Tell me a sandwich is “large” and I still have questions. Tell me it’s approximately one newborn long and, well, I have different questions. But at least we’ve established that I should probably bring someone to split it with.
