A lot of common household items are taken for granted. After a while, everything tends to get a little worn out. When that happens, it starts to affect its function.

Do you read the little booklet of instructions when you purchase an item?

Don’t worry, this is no test!

You’d be surprised by just how many items need only a little tidying up to extend their lifeline.

Bedsheets and Pillows

Your bedsheets and pillows hold an insane amount of live bacteria. As gross as it sounds, all the sweat and oils and other fluids from your body and face seep into the covers and the pillows creating a kaleidoscope of germs and harmful bacteria.

Give due attention to the bedding for all the rooms. Change those sheets and pillows every month. Make your bed cleaner and use a mattress protector to soak up all the germs instead!

Toothbrushes

The bristles on your toothbrush get a little worn out after a while and won’t be able to clean your teeth properly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that a toothbrush should be changed every 3-4 months

Smile Brilliant’s replacement brush heads will satisfy electric toothbrush hygiene needs. Instead of purchasing a brand-new electric toothbrush, Smile Brilliant offers a cost-effective and reliable way to keep clean!

Loofahs

No amount of shower gel or soap will be able to completely clean your bath loofah.

Your loofah touches every part of your body and carries germs from them all. The net catches dead skin and germs effectively. You can’t keep boiling it to kill the germs.

A replacement would do a much better job of washing you than an old, worn-out loofah.

Towels

Damp towels hold your dead skin and bodily secretions even after they’re dried.  An occasional wash in the washing machine shouldn’t be your only routine.

Using old towels can cause your skin to break out because of the bacteria it harbors.

Replace your bath towels when you notice them losing their quality to absorb and rip.

Bath Mats

There’s no fixed period or requirement for bath mats to be replaced. Bath mats are used frequently. Continuous exposure to moisture facilitates mold growth.

You can tell when the mat is at its end, the fibers on the mat start to clump together and it stays damp.

When it’s no longer effective, buy a new one!

Faucet and Showerhead Filters

Your water filter can break down over time and no longer filter the water you use to wash your mouth, face, body, and hair.  The harmful elements of unfiltered water can cause body acne, dry skin, frizzy hair, or even hair fall.

To ensure you do everything to keep your body neat and healthy, replace those filters.

If you find it difficult to replace, you can always call a plumber or purchase the add-on shower filters readily available in stores!

Dishwashing Sponges

Just like loofahs, kitchen sponges provide the perfect environment for germs to grow. They’re moist, sometimes contain food particles, and aren’t properly disinfected very often.

Sponges and scrubs have little crevices wherein bacteria can settle. Disinfect your kitchen scrub after every use by either boiling it or wetting it and placing it in the microwave for a minute. The heat kills bacteria.

Cutting Boards

People tend to skip over replacing cutting boards. Sometimes, cleaning is just not enough.

Cuts and cracks on a cutting board act as breeding grounds for numerous pathogenic microorganisms. Once these organisms start cultivating, it’s harder to keep disinfecting.

Let go of that cutting board that’s been in your family for decades!

Washing Machine Lint Filters

While not all washer-dryers are built this way, some machines have a mesh lint trap or a filter to strain the lint out.

Lint is made up of textile fibers, dead skin, hair, fur, and gunk. The filter or trap needs to be replaced monthly. Not only do lint balls get stuck on your laundered items but also pose a fire hazard if left unattended.

Conclusion

Bottom line is, plenty of household items require regular replacement. Some of these were probably common knowledge but they’re still high up on the list because not enough people know about them!

What household item are you tenacious about replacing?
