If you are looking to dive into some home repair projects but don’t know where to start, then you likely need a contractor. This can be hard for someone who is adamant about DIY projects, however, there are some projects you don’t want to mess with without a licensed contractor because of the potential structural implications depending on the project. This is important especially if you are planning to file any kind of home insurance claim. So, what is the best way to find a contractor for house flipping, investing or your own project? There are a few things to consider before you decide who is working in your home.

How To Select the Best Contractor for Your Home Repairs

Get Referrals

One of the best ways to find a contractor is by asking others. Go through your trusted family and friends and consider using someone that they have had a good experience with. By asking others you can build a much smaller list than just googling your entire city for a reputable contractor. You want to make sure they are licensed and meet the standards and requirements you need for the project and your insurance claim.

Licensed, Bonded, and Insured

As stated above you need someone who is licensed, bonded, and insured. Checking that your contractor is licensed means that this company or individual is legally able to take on your home project and that they have the training and skills needed. A bonded contractor means that they guarantee their work is completed as agreed upon. They will have to abide by all industry guidelines as they work on your home and its different systems. If for some reason the contractor fails to do this then you have the right to file a claim against their bond. An insured contractor means that they have protection for you and themselves in the unfortunate event that someone is injured on the job or in the home. This means that you are not liable for the injury to a person or other parts of your home that could cause damage due to the repairs.

Read Ratings and Reviews

Greg Kennedy of South Calgary Real Estate says, “Even if you are considering a company that you found out about through referrals, look at reviews and ratings. It never hurts to get more information. You can gauge a contractor’s abilities by reading through customer ratings and reviews to get an idea of what multiple people think about the work done on their home. Most reviews and ratings are found through social media as well as Google or Yelp. If you see a lot of recommendations and high ratings, then you are likely to be selecting a good contractor that will be knowledgeable and provide you with great experience.”

Choosing The Contractor

Keep in mind that not all contractors are the same when you are selecting one for your home repair or project. Contractors usually specialize in specific trades needed to maintain a home. There are roofers, electricians, carpenters, appliances, and general contractors. Taking all the above things into consideration and knowing what type of contractor you need for your project will lead you to your best decision.
