Makeup trends are always coming and going on social media. Five minutes on “makeup Tiktok” in the past year would give you numerous full tutorials on how to make a siren eye or a doe eye, looks that completely change the appearance of your eye shape just by applying mascara and eyeliner a certain way. But one trend that remains in style pretty much all the time is the no-makeup makeup look.

There are numerous ways you can achieve the natural, no-makeup appearance – and yes, many of those ways actually do include makeup. But the key to this look is using products and techniques that will make that all-natural appearance look effortless, like you spent no time on it at all. So from natural lash extensions to the ultimate eyebrow hack, here are a few tips so you can rock that effortless no-makeup look for yourself.

1. Skincare is Key

As the name indicates, the goal of a no-makeup look is to appear like you’re not wearing makeup. So the best, most direct way to achieve a no-makeup look? Don’t wear makeup. At least, no skin products. And with a great skincare routine, that is possible for some people, believe it or not. At the very least, if you take care of your skin, you may get to a point where the skin on your face looks so hydrated, so healthy, that just a dash of makeup products will do the trick, giving you a look that’s the next-best thing to actually not wearing makeup.

2. Opt for SPF

Sure, it’s part of skincare, but it’s a part that’s too often overlooked: sunscreen. Yes, having a tanned face looks and feels great, and sometimes it even seems like a little sun on your face clears your skin better than any product could. But you can still get a healthy amount of sun while also protecting yourself from UV rays that might leave you looking sun-kissed in the moment, but could leave you looking sun-destroyed in the future.

Thus, one of the best ways to get that all natural, no makeup appearance is to protect your skin from the sun, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to choose skin products with SPF in them. It’s easy to overlook the need for sunscreen when you’re not spending the day at the beach, but if you live in a walkable city or if you spend time outside, you’re always subjecting your skin to the potential harm from the sun’s rays. So whether it’s foundation or moisturizer, if you want to protect your skin to save yourself from needing extra products in the future, choose products now that include SPF. You’ll thank us later.

3. Use Natural Lash Extensions

When you’re going for a no makeup look, mascara is optional. But if you get yourself natural lash extensions, mascara will not only be optional, it’ll be unnecessary. Natural lash extensions are your best friend when it comes to achieving the no-makeup makeup look. You can give yourself longer, thicker, more curled eyelashes without even a dash of mascara just by wearing natural lash extensions. With the right pair, you’re not even rocking a “no-makeup makeup look;” rather, you’re genuinely not wearing eye makeup, giving you a truly natural appearance. Well, sort of. No one needs to know about the boost from the natural lash extensions.

4. Get Creative with Light Eye Makeup

It should go without saying that if you’re hoping to achieve a no-makeup makeup look, you shouldn’t be caking on mascara, applying winged eyeliner, and creating a smokey eye with eyeshadow. As we mentioned above, a safer option is to ditch mascara altogether and use lash extensions. But you can use makeup products to achieve the no makeup look, and creative eye makeup replacements are the perfect example.

On top of the lash extensions, consider using a bronzer or foundation for eyeshadow; this will ensure your eyes look natural by keeping them skin colored, but it will also give you control, allowing for consistency and subtle color on the eyelids. Some products even add a little shimmer, but if it’s traditionally a skin product, you can be confident that it won’t take your no-makeup look overboard.

5. Use Your Brows to Your Advantage

Of course, eyes are the most noticeable natural accessory on the face, but don’t underestimate the power of eyebrows, especially when done right. With just a little product (you can even use hair gel here), you can keep your eyebrows brushed up all day long, adding fullness to your eyebrows regardless of how fine or sparse they may be on their own. Thin, arched brows aren’t all the rage anymore, and it’s one of the best gifts the no-makeup advocates could have gotten. Instead, everybody’s brushing their brows, and whether you use a little gel to keep them in place or not, it genuinely is a no-makeup look.
