If the nausea gun wasn’t enough to stop the annoying people in your life, then may you just need to shut them up. No, I don’t mean mafia style violence—shut them up with science. The SpeechJammer does pretty much the same thing that an annoying sibling does—it repeats the victim’s words back to them and disrupts their train of thought. (Except you can’t outsmart it by making it say, “I’m stupid.”) It sounds almost too simple to work, but psychologists have observed that it’s nearly impossible for someone to speak when their own words are replayed with a delay of a fraction of a second. The gun, designed by Japanese researchers Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada, uses a directional mic and speaker so it can be aimed at a specific person from a distance. As tempting as it may be, you probably still don’t want to pull one of these out during a political speech—unless you like getting tackled and tasered by guys in suits who thought you had a real gun.
