What can you do with a plastic drinking straw? Make water come out of your nose. Blow bubbles. Impressive. What can you do with thousands of them…besides make a mess? SangSik Hong uses straws to make sculptures worthy of being called art. The artist explains it away by talking about how the straw, “contrary to the properties of power, is a weak structure, easily available to anyone for it is produced on a large scale and a disposable material.” That’s all good and lovely, but I’m simply blown away by how he manages to make the flimsy plastic tubes appear 3D installations of sexy.
