In a country where the most important religious holidays become shopping opportunities it’s refreshing to see artists like Virginia Fleck turn the tables. She creates giant mandalas, spiritual symbols seen in Buddism and Hinduism, from recycled plastic bags taking something commercial and turning into a symbol of faith (instead of the other way around for a change). Each mandala contains thousands of peices of used plastic bags with all too familiar logos and slogans that when presented in this way take on a strikingly different tone.
