Looking down at any of the world’s major cities might feel overwhelming or even exhilarating. It’s hard to fully grasp the idea that you are but one among millions. In Beijing alone the population exceeds 22 million—numbers that make it nearly impossible to imagine all of those people as individuals. Yet somehow Jasper James unifies a sense of human individuality and the vastness of the city through his photography. In the photo series, City Silhouettes, each piece displays two subjects and styles—portraits and cityscapes. With a clever use of light and reflected glass, James draws the image of the city through the person viewing it, creating an unusual silhouette. The result is an assortment of powerful moods and emotions that entice the viewer to reflect on their own individuality and how they fit into the bigger picture.
