When someone says that their apartment building was a real dump before management finally decided to renovate, they’re probably exaggerating. Unless of course they live in these apartments in Amsterdam-West. Because before the architects of Dick van Gameren got a hold of them, these apartments used to be a Dutch sewage plant. With quite a bit of effort (certainly more than the half-assed whitewashing your landlord tries to pull) they converted the old plant into a naturally lit, eco-friendly place to live. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, they re-purposed the large concrete drums that made up the plant as a greywater collection tank and storage area.
