This weekend, Incredible Things contributor Graham High hit up BrunchCon, the world’s first brunch convention, at The Reef in Downtown Los Angeles. He came back with the scoop. The following is that. (“That” being “the scoop.”)
BrunchCon is where conventions go to brunch.
The event had all the usual favorites you’d expect: Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, coffee, wine, waffles, crepes, biscuits, gravy, sausage, gourmet cheese and even ceviche (a good hangover cure, I’ve heard). Oh, and lines… lots of lines. Like the ones you see on a Sunday morning outside that hip new restaurant known for making French Toast with Brioche and organically sourced vanilla. It was all worth it, however, to taste the finest things you can eat in the morning — or three in the afternoon, for that matter.
One of my favorites included the cold press coffee from Contra Coffee served nitrous draft-style. The “Dirty Horchata” was especially smooth and sweet. Can I install one of these taps next to my bed? No? Okay.
Gigi‘s came through with some tasty pastries, including a flaky guava pastelito that somehow disappears as soon as it hits your lips. Weird.
The Middlebar Mary delivered a zesty Bloody Mary that wasn’t too spicy but still packed a punch. There was a green bean in my drink, so I got seconds to make sure I get all my vegetables for the day.
I was in desperate need of something savory, so The Little Easy provided a welcome assortment of gumbo, biscuits & gravy, and sausage. Have you ever seen gravy poured from a pitcher? It’s mesmerizing.
Does anyone have a shot of insulin? I’m trying to stave off Mimosa induced diabetes. That’s a thing, right?
