Pop Hybrids

Pop Hybrids

Strong visual artists make striking use of contrast in their work, but Troy Gua doesn’t simply use colors, shadows and highlights to create contrast, but subject matter. The Pop Hybrids series places famous and infamous icons layered together in way that makes you stop not only to make out the two portraits but contemplate their connection or contrast. Many times the connections seem humorous at first until you read deeper into the meaning. For instance, The Mickey Mao depicts one figure who was a communist leader and another that is a beloved character and a symbol of capitalism, which both have had enormous influence on the world.
